Thermowood Flooring - A possible replacement for teak flooring?

JK's Thermowood Flooring uses tongue and groove join system. The D3 flooring looks exactly like Teak Wood flooring. In fact, 2 pieces out of the 20 odd is teak wood.

We are getting very good feedback from the Thailand's local market and ready to take on Asia. If you are interested in using Solid Wood Indoor flooring for your next project, do reach out. Note that JKlass flooring uses zero chemicals. It is 100% natural finished. Great for environmental eco-friendly projects.

What is Thermowood?

Thermowood is a thermally modification process using steam and high heat treatment. The process  takes between 24 and 48 hours, taking into account some variables such as; timber species, width and initial moisture content.
Thermowood process can be divided into 3 parts; high temperature drying, heat treatment and cooling. Thanks to the thermowood process, most of negativeness of the wood are minimized and are being abolished.
As a result of the high temperature applied to the wood, the substances which are shortening the lifecycle (glucose, citric acid, resin etc.) that exist in the inner part of the wood are resolved and the rest is crystallized. This process makes the physical properties of the timber better, improves the durability and provides an excellent colour.
As a result, JK Thermowood timber becomes stable.
The quality of the timber to be used for the Thermowood process is very important. The wood which is used during the Thermowood process is selected carefully from our own sustainable forest. The suitability of the knots, fiber structure, tree age, humidity of the wood is important to achieve the highest quality.
As a principle the heat treatment process can be done on all wood species. Wood species that JK Wood has in it’s production range are rubberwood and pine. There are plans in the near future for expanding production using other wood types.

Advantages of Thermowood

The benefits of thermowood are its durability, beauty, dimensional stability, environmental friendliness and quality.

Thermal Modification is a process in which high temperatures are used to remove moisture, bacteria and acids from the wood. The result is wood which has greater resistance against fungal attack, rot and mould. Thermal Modification provides wood a very long lifetime and dimensional stability.

Today, knowledge of wood processing that is thousands of years old have met modern possibilities of the technology. The era of environmentally friendly thermowood has commenced. JK Innovation Wood, based in Thailand, is the one and only in Thailand utilising this technology.

High-quality raw material for heat treatment is extremely important, because the heat treatment of wood brings out any quality defects in timber. JK uses top quality rubberwood selected from sustainable sources as its raw material.

Thermal Modification Process

Thermal modification technology (powered by LUXHAMMAR) exposes timber to high temperatures which permanently change the physical, chemical and biological properties of the wood. The benefits are:

1) reduced dimensional movement from changing humidity,
2) a significantly improved resistance to decay and weathering, and
3) an attractively darker, more consistent colour of the wood.

Traditionally, wood is processed by heat treatment (klin dried) and then followed by chemical treating which only affects appearance, thermal modification produces different grades of durability, making it possible to use thermowood instead of tropical hardwoods for demanding applications like decking, exterior/interior doors and thermowood-flooring with sub-floor heating. No resins or chemicals are used in the process, which besides being easier on the environment, makes it ideal for kitchens, playground equipment and children’s toys. Thermowood is indeed the green alternative for outdoor timber.

The thermal modification process can be divided into 3 phases:

Phase 1. High temperature drying using heat & steam. Kiln temperature is rapidly raised to approximately 100 °C, then gradually to 130 °C, during which time the moisture content of the wood decreases to nearly zero.

Phase 2. Heat treatment. Kiln temperature increased to between 185 °C and 250 °C, then held constant for 2–3 hours depending on the desired end-use.

Phase 3. Cooling and moisture conditioning. Water spray is used to lower the temperature to 80–90 °C, where re-moisturizing takes place, achieving a useable level of 4–7%.

Thermal modification is suitable for most timber species, including tropical hardwoods like Rubberwood, Merpauh and Plantation Teak. The fast growth of plantation-grown tropical hardwoods makes these species less durable than wood harvested from rain forests – the missing properties can be upgraded with thermal modification. Sapwood also presents well-known problems. With thermal modification, very good durability and stability can be obtained while at the same time minimising colour differences between heartwood and sapwood.

Finally, thermally-modified wood is easy to work with. The reduction of internal tensions and friction-causing resin makes it saw more easily, with a smoother cut surface. It sands beautifully and accepts finishes as well as ordinary wood.
